Leadership research continues to be an evolving field of social science. In a recent article published in the premier leadership journal, The Leadership Quarterly, Vera et al. (2022) assert the “general lack of dialogue among leadership scholars in the organizational behavior, industrial and organizational psychology, organizational economics, behavioral strategy, and strategic management fields” is resulting in “diverse terminology and disconnected constructs, overlapping research questions, studies not building on appropriate findings, fragmentation, and a bricolage of different theories” (p. 1). The wide application of such theoretical divergence across a variety of organizational milieu in “the real world” demonstrate an even further disconnect between academia and practice. To that end, there is a pressing need for rigorously-educated AND battlefield-tested leadership coaches and consultants to span the distance between the Ivory Tower and the C-suite.

In the meantime, offered here are excerpts from Dr. Julie Armstrong’s academic research and industry thought-leadership demonstrating both her expert-level knowledge and integrated practical experience. Julie is particularly interested in research related to strategic leadership, middle leadership, shared leadership, and leadership development. Julie’s doctoral research, titled Toward Understanding Middle Leadership, focused on the leadership competencies middle managers need to perform as middle leaders, and their influence on employee performance.
